Bovince Ochieng Honoured for Creating Pathways for Young People to Thrive

Kisumu County Chief Officer for Education, Technical Training, Innovation and Social Services Eng. Bovince Ochieng has been honoured for creating pathways that equip young people with the skills, opportunities and confidence needed to participate meaningfully in employment, entrepreneurship and civic life.

Ochieng received the Development of the Young Workforce Award at the inaugural SPICY Awards 2026 in Nairobi, with the citation recognising his efforts to turn purpose into action and promote grassroots changemaking through education, organisation, leadership and collaboration

.

The citation further recognised his contribution to creating opportunities through which people, communities and institutions can grow and thrive, particularly by helping young people develop skills and access opportunities that can improve their economic prospects.The recognition comes as Ochieng continues to play a key role in Kisumu County’s efforts to strengthen education, technical training, innovation and pathways into employment.

In April 2026, Ochieng said the county was expanding investment in Vocational Training Centres to accommodate thousands of young people who miss university placement, while encouraging them to acquire practical skills aligned with labour market demands.

His portfolio has also encompassed initiatives supporting inclusive education and access to learning opportunities. In January 2026, he represented the county administration during the handover of a specialised classroom at Ogwedhi PAG Primary School in Nyando Sub County, designed to support learners with disabilities.

Before assuming the education docket, Ochieng served as Director of Trade and Enterprise Development in Kisumu County between 2020 and 2023, giving him experience in enterprise development and economic empowerment.

He received Winner Certificate No. SA26W INI 00101 at the Nairobi ceremony on September 12, 2026. The certificate was signed by Daniel Juma Omondi, Chair of the SPICY Awards 2026 Awarding Board, and Erick Inghatt Matsanza, Project Executive of SPICY Awards 2026 and Founder of Spice Without Borders.

Speaking after the ceremony, Ochieng dedicated the honour to young people striving to establish themselves in the workforce.

“This award is a great honour. It is dedicated to every young person striving to find their place in the workforce. My mission has always been to turn purpose into action and build bridges for young people to access skills, jobs and opportunities,” he said.

He said the recognition would further strengthen his commitment to initiatives that give young people practical skills and opportunities to participate in the economy.

The inaugural SPICY Awards, organised by Spice Without Borders, brought together changemakers under categories covering Activists, Creatives, Entrepreneurs, Thinkers and Initiators.

Ochieng’s recognition comes against the backdrop of growing concern across Africa over youth unemployment and the need to bridge the gap between education, technical skills and available employment opportunities.

For Kisumu County, strengthening vocational training and innovation remains an important component of efforts to provide young people with alternatives to conventional academic pathways while equipping them with skills that can support employment and entrepreneurship.

Ochieng’s work in the sector reflects a broader push to make education more responsive to the realities of the labour market and ensure young people are positioned to contribute productively to their communities and the wider economy.

Beyond his current public service role, Ochieng is also eyeing the Kisumu Central parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election, a move that is expected to place his record in education, technical training, innovation and youth empowerment under closer public scrutiny as the political contest takes shape.
